Read in 100 Easy Lessons

It was my first year of teaching and I had been hired by a small district in the mountains of Northern California.  My class would consist of 19 students:  Three Kinder, 2 First grade, 1 second grader, 8 third graders and 5 in the fourth grade.

(You thought this kind of classroom only existed in history books from the 1800's, right?  I did, too!  Many small rural towns across the country have to consolidate their grades into one classroom.  Another school in my district had Kindergarten through 8th in one class.)

With one full time Teacher's Aide and a whole lot of advance planning, I had figured out a way for my 2nd through 4th grades to work independently while I focused on reading with the younger children.  But the question was, in a setting like this, what reading program do I use?

Something that would work for a 5 to 1 student teacher ratio, that would pack a big punch in a short amount of time and that would cover abilities that were widely ranging, as one of my 1st graders was special needs.  I knew what I needed:

But this book had been modified by DISTAR for parent and child, in a one on one setting (as almost every homeschooling parent can tell you).

Could I add a few items to make it work for my group of 5?  I could and did!  Let me share a little with you about this amazing reading program, and the packets we offer that work so well with it (please watch):

Sometimes, children need a little something extra to turn on the light of excitement inside them.

These supplements are exactly what is needed to turn that light on!

"As a homeschool mom, I was hesitant about "100 Easy Lessons" because of the lack of reinforcement activities provided by the curriculum itself. Once we found GlimmerCat's packets, it was an easy choice for us to continue with using it with our kindergartner. He has not only done beautifully with "100 Easy Lessons," but has thrived with these additional packets because of our ability to reinforce the lessons with quick and easy worksheets (that he actually enjoys!), crafts, and the flash cards that make reviewing the sounds he's learned easy to do no matter where we are. We have laminated the flash cards with each packet, and keep them handy for waiting rooms, long car rides, and restaurants, and have enjoyed making card games of our own with them to help him review. Thank you for such a great resource!"

Reading Curriculum Supplementary Printables

It's that time!  You've found your reading curriculum because it was recommended to you by almost every other homeschooler you have run across.  It's all included in one beautiful "not-so-little" book with this huge title:  "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons".

You've even skimmed through the first few pages and you're just itching to try it all out, with your child sitting in your lap, reading through the sounds with you.

Here's the only catch:  You had hoped to include a few complimentary crafts for your beginning reader and maybe a few follow-ups along with Siegfried Engelmann's valuable reading instruction.  You are aware already that repetition for small ones is vital, and although much repetition is built into "Teach Your Child to Read", there is always room for more, especially when it can be an engaging activity outside of the book itself.

This is the whole reason I created supplementary printables myself.

  • I wanted crafts.
  • I wanted extra hands-on activities, and heck,
  • I even wanted worksheets that showed my child how to write the letters as recommended at the end of each lesson, without having to create the letters myself by hand on a piece of writing paper.

So, here I am, with printable packets created  and my middle child is ready to begin reading.  In fact, she has already completed the first 5 lessons.  So, it is time for us to begin my first supplemental phonics packet:  After Five Phonics! ( Click Here to get it FREE )

"Love these printables.  It was the main thing that made this program doable for us, my son really struggled with the book and was bored with it quickly, but he tolerated it when he got to do these lessons afterwards."

I am SO happy to hear about this.  It is the very reason why I created these products.  To be honest, I think most of us appreciate a little variety and creativity in their lives.  Kids are no exception.  Thank you for taking the time to share.

"Looking forward to getting the rest. Would have preferred the first lesson free though this starts further on." -- Emma O.

You're right, Emma--the free lessons are something that can be used a little later in the program, maybe around lesson 10 for "Mat the Rat" or a tad earlier for "Sam the Ram".  Most of those who are new to the Reading Program do not often discover that they want supplements until they are a few lessons in or until the newness begins to wear off for their students.

"Great job. Would love to have all the 'stories.'"

Great feedback!  We do have more of these kinds of "Stories" labeled as "Story-time" pages, in our Glimmercat "After Phonics" packets:

It's time to get prepared!

I printed out some of the color worksheets and then purchased some self-laminating sheets and dry erase markers.

I followed the directions, covering both sides of the paper with the laminating sheets and we are ready for this! With a thrill, I realize these are now primed to last over and over, for fun repetition with all three of my kiddos!

I try them out on my daughter (remember, she has completed the first five lessons of the book already).

Even though she knows her sounds, I realized as she worked on this first worksheet, that it was helping connect the dots between an image and a sound.

Also, she was learning new vocabulary since "Eagle" was a new word for her.  But these new pens were a fun tool, and she seemed to enjoy the activity.

The next day, she was ready for another.  And boy, was she enjoying her new printables.  Even her brother decided to get involved.

The dry erase marks wipe easily off with a paper towel after use and they write on smoothly.  Below, my son tried out the "What Do You See" Page by drawing a picture of himself picking a flower.

I'm looking forward to expanding my daughter's experiences with these fun worksheets and giving her another opportunity to practice her sounds with the flash cards seen below.

We are all set!!!

"I give this an A+! These are *perfect* accompaniments for the "100 Easy Lessons..." book. That book is the only way my son could grasp reading (we homeschool), and I was going crazy trying to find something to use with it to reinforce. These are AWESOME. I can't say enough good things about them. My only complaint is I wish they went further up in the lessons! Thanks SO much!!!" -- Beth Yarwood

"I love that this packet added the "Story-Time" section. It's one of my son's favorite parts of the lessons in "100 Easy Lessons" and I know he'll enjoy having that as an additional reinforcement activity in the packet. Thank you for such a wonderful resource!"

"We are on Lesson 19. I've already printed the flashcards and the remainder of this packet looks great. I look forward to using  these materials in the next week." -- Tescille R.

"I love these packets. I think I've bought all of the ones that are out now.  I use Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons in my K-2 special education classroom.  I tend to save these for sub plans.  The kids love that they are cute and something a little different than our usual reading group.  They support the lessons so well."

"Great companion resource to accompany Twach my kid to read in 100 easy lessons. Especially since the book itself can loose interest pretty easy. Brought fun back into it."

"I use this with my ESL students that know very little English. It is soooo good!" -- Junelle K.

"This is our first time using 100 Easy Lessons and these packets have made reinforcing the lessons we cover so easy. As a homeschool family, having a resource like this that is flexible and easy to implement is such a blessing. The worksheets are quick and easy for my kindergartner to complete with very little help and the flash cards make reviewing sounds possible when we're on the road with the help the older siblings. "

Most of you are familiar with the Reading Program "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons", and I can promise you it has been easier to come up with engaging stories and entertaining activities with the broader range of sounds I have to work with, having once hit lesson 50.  In fact, I'd like to show you a few of these new stories...

Here is the Mini Book that comes with the After Seventy-Five Packet.  Look at that pink car!  There just isn't anything more fun than a horse named Molly, stealing a red car and driving it into a tree.

Another change we see as our supplementals progress through the lessons, is the ability to move on to more standard looking fonts in the stories.

Because the classic fonts are introduced at this time in the Reading Program "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons", and they are introduced along with the entire alphabet of letters, I decided children should get the chance to use their deciphering and decoding skills as they match letters in a variety of fun fonts.

This offers excellent practice with old letters and new, and gives you great opportunity to share the names of the letters as you go.

The last change that we see in these latest supplemental packets, is the opportunity to observe words in both the font from the Reading Program "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessonsand let kids match it with the exact word in a new font.

And the crafts included in these great little packets tie in perfectly with the stories from the program.

we also included pages that tie in the new font introduced, with the old font.

We also give additional alphabet practice for those lessons that introduce letters and sounds which do not receive a whole lot of attention, like Q or X.

As I have mentioned above, how much I love the reading program "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons".  With my own kids in mind, I created some additional supplemental worksheets to go along with it.

Because we needed some things like this:

And some things like this:

And even some things like this:

So, we have Phonics printable packets that look like this:

These packets are intended to be used alongside the Distar Reading program, "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" and each packet includes everything needed for supplementing when you are following through the lessons in order.  So, when you have finished lesson 10, you will be ready for everything included in the "After Ten" packet.

ABOUT THAT READING PROGRAM:
I love the comfortable intimacy of sitting down on the couch to read with my kids.  I love the ease of reading through the daily lesson.  And I love the overall sense of it.  It just breaks down "Reading" into this easily understandable activity.  And the pictures and stories in the book help it stay fun.

The book's authors suggest that it is a stand alone program (and it is!) and that the only other materials you will need are a pencil and paper, to write out the sounds for writing practice.

This is true, you don't need anything more than the book to teach your child to read.

But, since my children love crafts and getting to put their knowledge of their learning to work, I decided to make a collection of worksheets, activities and crafts called "After Five Phonics", as a Set to supplement the first 5 lessons of  "...100 Easy Lessons".

And then, I kept on going, making packets for every five lessons that included extra activities...

 and worksheets...

 mini books,

...even crafts that went along with the new sounds being learned.

When I used this program before, I wanted practice sheets for the writing part of the program. If you are familiar with "How to Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons", you'll remember that sound introduction happens in a  different order than the ABC's are usually introduced.  But even the way the sound for "A" is introduced is a challenge, as in the "100 Easy Lessons" book, it looks different than most lowercase A's do in Kindergarten workbooks.  And what I really wanted, was something more like this:

Sample worksheet from the "After Five" packet

So now I have it.  With nice colorful imagery, in case someone wants to print it out, laminate it and reuse it over and over (which would really be helpful).  I also included black and white options for those who prefer to print these out at home without using up their color cartridges:

Sample worksheet from the "After Ten" packet

The teacher side of me kicked in and whispered, "You know, some supplemental activities that added more sound/letter recognition would be really nice..."  So I made some of this:

And then added some of this (mixing in some shapes and color practice):

And then I remembered how I used this program for teaching in a combined classroom, and I REALLY wanted some nice colorful flashcards...so I made some of these:

Let's look at another one of those craft pages:

If you're not exactly sure what you're looking at there, that is a "Mat the Rat" Craft, from one of my freebie reading stories.  This one here, in fact:

You can download this free reading story, along with four others, right here .
